Epson “ink pad is at the end of its service life”: how to fix and reset it

Your Epson stopped printing and says the ink pad is at the end of its service life, shows E-11 or “Service Required”, or blinks its lights in turn? The printer isn’t broken — a counter in its memory has hit the factory limit. Here is what that means and how to reset it yourself in a few minutes, from a phone or a computer.

The messages this guide is about

Epson words the same lock differently depending on the model, the driver and the language. If you see any of these, the waste ink counter is the cause:

In English (printer screen, driver, Epson Status Monitor)
  • The printer's ink pad is at the end of its service life.
  • A printer's ink pad is at the end of its service life.
  • The printer's ink pad is nearing the end of its service life.
  • Parts inside your printer are at the end of their service life.
  • Service Required.

“Nearing the end of its service life” is the early warning — the printer keeps printing for a while. “At the end of its service life”, “Parts inside your printer are at the end of their service life” and “Service Required” mean it has locked itself and won’t print until the counter is reset.

Why the printer locks itself

Every time an Epson printer cleans its head, primes the ink lines or prints borderless, some ink goes not onto the paper but into absorbent pads inside the printer — the waste ink pad, often nicknamed the “sponge” or the “pampers”.

The printer doesn’t measure how wet the pad really is. It estimates it with a counter in its memory, and when that counter reaches the limit Epson set at the factory, the printer stops so ink can’t overflow onto your desk — even if the pad still has plenty of room.

That is why the error so often appears on a printer that otherwise works perfectly, usually after many thousands of pages or a lot of head cleanings. Printers that are cleaned often, and busy L-series and EcoTank models, reach the limit sooner.

What E-11 and the blinking lights mean

On models with a screen, the same lock appears as error code E-11, sometimes with a note to contact Epson Support. Models without a screen show it with their lights: the power, paper and ink lights flash alternately, and the printer ignores every print job.

The full sentence usually comes from Epson Status Monitor or the driver on a computer — for example “The printer's ink pad is at the end of its service life. Please contact Epson Support.” — while the printer itself only blinks.

How to reset the Epson waste ink pad counter

With Printfor Reset it takes a few minutes. You don’t need to open the printer or hunt for a Windows-only resetter utility.

  1. 1

Make sure it’s the ink pad error

Look for one of the messages above, E-11 on the screen, or the lights flashing alternately while the printer refuses to print.

  2. 2

Check that your model is supported

Find your printer in the list of supported Epson models. Each model page says whether it resets over Wi‑Fi, over USB, or both.

    All supported models
  3. 3

    Install Printfor Reset

Get the app for Android or iPhone, or the desktop app for Windows or macOS, and sign in with the code sent to your email. One account works on every device.

  4. 4

    Connect to the printer

Put your phone or computer on the same Wi‑Fi as the printer — the app finds it. Models that reset over USB connect with a USB cable to a computer, or with a USB OTG cable to an Android phone.

  5. 5

    Read the counter for free

The app reads the waste ink counters and shows exactly how full they are, along with ink levels and the page count. This costs nothing.

  6. 6

    Reset the counter

Tap “Reset”. A permanent reset uses 1 reset; the result is read back from the printer and confirmed. No balance? The free partial reset lowers the counter by 10% once per printer, so you can finish an urgent job.

  7. 7

    Restart the printer

Turn the printer off and on again. The lights stop blinking, the message disappears and the printer prints as before.

Don’t forget the pad itself

A reset clears the counter, not the ink. If the printer has worked hard, the pad may really be close to full — and an overfilled pad can leak ink under the printer.

  • Replace the waste ink pad, or have a service centre clean it — on many models it’s a simple part.
  • Or fit an external waste ink tank (a small bottle on a tube), a popular choice for L-series and EcoTank printers.
  • Keep an eye on the counter: the app shows the percentage for free, so you’ll see the next limit coming.

Resetting the counter is a normal maintenance step that service centres perform too. Printfor writes only the waste ink counter and checks the printer’s serial number before writing.

Epson printers you can reset

256 Epson models are in the catalogue — L, EcoTank ET, WorkForce, XP and more. These are the ones people reset most often:

An Epson printer resetter for all models?

Many “Epson printer resetter” and “all model reset” tools are old Windows programs from unknown sources, tied to one model and often flagged by antivirus software. Printfor Reset is a phone and desktop app that resets 255 Epson models from one account, over Wi‑Fi or USB.

No model is reset blindly: each model page shows exactly what works, and new models appear there as soon as support is added. If yours isn’t listed, write to us.

Questions about the ink pad error

Is my printer broken if it says the ink pad is at the end of its service life?

No. The printer works; it stopped because a counter in its memory reached the factory limit. Once the counter is reset, it prints again.

What’s the difference between “nearing the end” and “at the end of its service life”?

“Nearing the end” is a warning — you can keep printing for a while. “At the end of its service life” (or “Service Required”, E-11) means the printer has locked itself and needs a reset.

Can I reset the ink pad counter without a computer?

Yes. On Wi‑Fi models your phone is enough — iPhone or Android. USB models connect to an Android phone with an OTG cable. If you prefer a computer, the Windows and macOS app does the same.

Will the error come back?

Only when the counter reaches the limit again, which usually takes a long time. The app shows the counter for free, so you can see how much is left.

Is it safe to reset the waste ink counter?

Yes, as long as the pad itself isn’t overflowing. Printfor changes only the waste ink counter and confirms the result. On heavily used printers, replace or clean the pad, or fit an external waste ink tank.

How much does it cost?

Reading the counter, nozzle check and head cleaning are free, and so is one partial reset per printer. A permanent reset costs 1 reset, and bundles are cheaper. No subscription.
